Decorative Paint Techniques: Striping

Stripes have always been a classic pattern and are a great way to give any room a new look.

First, determine the width and direction of the stripes you want to add. Keep in mind that narrow stripes in a large room get lost and large stripes in a small room look out of proportion.

Start with a fresh, dry basecoat. The next step is to mark off where you want the stripes to go. Using a level, pencil in the stripes. After all the stripes are marked in pencil, mask off the areas that are not being painted.

Now you're ready to paint the stripes. Either roll on or brush on your color depending on the width of the stripes. As soon as the stripe is finished, remove the masking tape so paint doesn't creep underneath it. If some paint has seeped through, carefully wipe off the excess with a damp paper towel. That's all there is to it. For a softer look, try diluting 3 parts paint with 1 part water and wash the stripes with a natural sea sponge.
