|Cracking Cracking is often the result of a build up of multiple coats of paint. The paint film, since it is excessively thick, cannot expand and contract with the surface. The paint becomes brittle and cracks and peels across the grain of the wood.
Removal to the bare wood is necessary to correct this problem. A high quality acrylic latex top coat is recommended due to its flexibility and durability. And, don't forget to follow the proper surface preparation techniques and prime the surface before painting.
