Boards

Plywood boards are used in shelving, woodwork, furniture making, interior and exterior construction projects, and trim work. Plywood can be softwood, hardwood, pressure-treated wood, or MDF.

  • Softwood - Made from softwoods like redwood, cedar, or pine.
  • Hardwood - Made from hardwoods like birch, maple, and oak.
  • Pressure-treated wood - Resistant to pests and weather.
  • MDF - Sturdy and readily paintable.

Furring Strips

Furring strips are used in construction. They are applied on a level surface to attach paneling or drywall. Strips come in sizes 1”x2”, 1”x3”, and 2”x2” and are made of materials like spruce, pine, or even metal. Pressure-treated strips are available for outdoor use.

Treated vs. Untreated Wood

Treated lumber is resistant to pests, UV rays, and weather, making it ideal for outdoor applications like decks and fences. Untreated wood is a better choice for indoor applications like furniture and cabinetry because it is easier to paint or finish and is more affordable.

Choosing the Right Lumber for Your Project

Choose between hardwood and softwood lumber or plywood based on the strength, flexibility, and finish desired for the project. Hardwoods are usually stronger and more durable. They stand up better in the elements and tend to be slightly more expensive. Most softwoods are lighter in color and absorb finish, paint, and treatments better. They are usually cheaper as well. Both hardwood and softwood will weather to a gray/silver color if left untreated.
