Stain & Finish Products

Wood stain adds color and protection to wood. Wood finish is applied over the stain to form a film that adds shine and protection. Multiple types of stains and finishes are available, and the best one for a project depends on whether it will be used indoors or outdoors and the preferred color and application method.

Interior Stains & Finishes

Interior wood finish products add a polished look to wood furniture, cabinets, trim, and more. The types of interior wood stain products and finishes are below.

Types of Interior Wood Stains

  • Oil-based stains penetrate deeply into the wood and have a rich color. This type of stain is great for furniture, cabinets, and large surfaces.
  • Water-based stains are faster drying than oil-based stains. They tend to require more coats to achieve a darker color. Water-based stains resist mold and mildew and are great for smaller projects.
  • Gel-based stains have a consistency between paint and stain. They are thicker, and the color can appear lighter or darker depending on how much the stain is rubbed into the wood. A gel-based stain is often used when it is necessary to hide imperfections in the wood.

Types of Interior Wood Finishes

A protective topcoat on interior wood projects helps waterproof the wood and protect it from dents and scratches that can happen over time.

  • Lacquer is a finish applied over a stain to form a film that adds shine and protection. Lacquer is commonly used on woodwork, cabinets, moulding, and trim.
  • Varnish is a finish or topcoat applied over a stain. It has minimal color and forms a glossy film to protect and add shine to the wood. Varnish is great for furniture and door and window trim.

Exterior Stains & Finishes

Exterior wood stains and finishes are essential in outdoor applications to protect from harsh weather conditions, UV rays, and moisture. Like interior stains, exterior stains come in different formulas and transparencies.

  • Oil-based stain is more affordable and provides easy maintenance over time.
  • Water-based stain has the best UV resistance and is mold- and mildew-resistant. The color does not penetrate the wood as deeply as oil, and the product dries quickly so careful application is required. Water-based stain works well in areas that receive a lot of sunlight.

The transparency of the stain determines how much of the wood beneath shows through. Transparent stains show the most wood grain, solid stains offer maximum protection and show less of the wood, and semi-transparent is in between.

It is also important to consider a water-repellent or UV-resistant sealer to add an extra layer of protection on decks, fences, and outdoor furniture.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane is a wood finish product that provides a protective and durable finish to wood surfaces. Polyurethane is resistant to scratches, moisture, and heat and is suitable for surfaces exposed to liquids.

Polyurethane is available in oil-based or water-based formulas. Oil-based formulas are resistant to wear, so they’re perfect for floors. They penetrate the wood and have a warm color over time. The downside to oil-based formulas is that they contain high VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), so they emit strong fumes as they dry and take longer to dry.

Water-based formulas are clear in color, dry more quickly, and emit less VOCs. They are not as durable as oil-based formulas, so they are best used on furniture and cabinets.

Finish Touch-Up

There are a variety of finish touch-up products available to keep wood finishes looking new. Pencils, markers, and wax sticks are offered in wood colors to match any stain. They help repair scratches, dents, and imperfections in finished wood. A layer of finish can be applied over the touch-up product if desired.
