Why stain a deck?

Deck stain will not only freshen up the look of your deck, but it will seal your wood deck to keep it strong. Stain helps to lock out moisture, as well as preventing damage from the sun.

When should I stain my deck?

The best time to stain a wood deck is either spring or fall. If you stain during summer when temperatures are generally warmer, try to keep from applying deck stain in direct sunlight. Doing so will result in the stain drying too quickly, which will cause the stain to be less effective. If summer is the only time you have to stain your deck, try morning or evening hours when the sun isn’t as hot. Watch the temperature of the deck as well. Sometimes the deck can actually be much hotter than the temperature of the air. Lastly, pick a day to stain when there isn’t a chance of rain to ruin your newly stained wood.

How many coats of stain should I put on my deck?

As a rule of thumb, it’s best to apply only as much stain as the wood can absorb. This will typically be about two coats. However, if your deck is an extremely hardwood it may only be able to absorb one coat.

How long will deck stain last?

There are two main Defy deck stains available:

  •  Transparent
  • Semi-transparent

With most deck stains, transparent deck stain will generally last about one year. Semi-transparent deck stain can last 2 to 3 years, and solid stain can last up to five years. Each stain comes with pros and cons. While solid stains can last longer, they also cover the natural beauty of the wood grain. Transparent deck stains let the most wood grain show through.

Defy Wood Brightener

When it comes to Defy decks stains, you can add 1-2 years onto your transparent and semi-transparent decks stains from other brands. Defy also offers wood brightener to extend the life of your Defy stain. If you notice any graying or signs of wear on your deck, simply use a wood brightener and a light coat of defy deck stain. This will prolong the life of your stain requiring a lot less maintenance.

How soon can it rain after staining a deck?

It is best to avoid staining your deck right before it's supposed to rain. Most stains require at least 2-3 hours for drying, but allow 24 hours for foot traffic.
