4. Use a Plastic Tote
This method is one of the simplest and cheapest ways to start composting, especially if you’re short on space or new to the process. Here are the instructions to creating a compost bin from a plastic tote:
- Start by finding a large plastic tote with a lid.
- Using a drill, create multiple small holes around the sides, lid, and bottom of the tote to allow for proper aeration and drainage.
- Elevate the tote by placing it on bricks or blocks to ensure air can circulate underneath.
- Begin layering your composting materials.
- Stir or shake the tote regularly to ensure even decomposition.
5. DIY Bokashi Bin
Bokashi composting is a unique method that involves fermenting food waste in an airtight environment using a Bokashi compost. You can buy a bokashi kit, but it’s very easy to make yourself. To create a DIY Bokashi system, you’ll need two 5-gallon plastic buckets that can nest together, a lid, and a spigot to drain the liquid produced during fermentation.
- Drill several holes in the bottom of one bucket, then place it inside the second bucket.
- Begin by adding a layer of Bokashi compost, followed by your food scraps.
- Continue layering scraps and Bokashi compost on top until the bucket is full, pressing down each layer to remove air.
- Seal the lid tightly and let the contents ferment for about two weeks.
- Once fermentation is complete, the pre-compost can be buried, where it will break down further and enrich the soil.
