DIY Indoor Projects for Winter

By McCabe Do it Center

Staying indoors during Ohio's harsh winters doesn't have to be dreary. In your free time, you can keep yourself busy with fix-ups and touch-ups that have remained unattended. A survey of your home's interiors will help you make up a list of to-dos and give you satisfaction after you've completed your job(s) for the day.

Indoor project ideas

Here are some indoor project ideas that you can attempt safely and quite easily.

Paint something!

Walls, obviously. But kitchen cabinets too. Painting the cabinets will cost you far less than installing new ones, and save you money to spend on other DIY projects. Painting options include:

  • Changing an outdated color
  • Making rooms appear cleaner, bigger, and brighter
  • Adding an accent wall in each of your rooms
  • Livening up your favorite space with interesting colors
  • Making your ceiling pop

Benjamin Moore has excellent advice on how you can go about painting and enhancing your home. Stock up with Benjamin Moore paint, primer, and paint brushes, available at McCabe Do It Center.

Fix dripping faucets

A leaky faucet can waste over 20 gallons of water a day. The dripping water can cause damage to other fixtures over time, requiring expensive repair. Tackling the issue quickly will help you conserve water and avoid easily preventable expenses down the line.

Repairing or replacing your faucet doesn't always require a plumber's services. A dripping faucet is a common plumbing issue. Often the problem can be traced to a worn-out cartridge or its rubber parts, such as its O-rings. Replacing the cartridge is pretty straightforward. At the most, you'll require a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench, and a hex key.

We have a wide range of adjustable wrenches, many of which we can ship directly to you while others will require a store pick-up.

Fix loose drawers

Your home's drawers slide open on their own? Broken plastic guides are the most common reason for loose drawers. Fortunately, they're also the easiest to fix. You simply have to replace the broken or missing plastic guide(s) and your drawers will be back to operating smoothly.

The actual repair is easy too and you may not need anything more than the right-sized screwdriver. Replacement parts will be available at any hardware store. We stock plastic drawer track guide kits, track guides and track socket mounting brackets, so be sure to check our range.

Quiet squeaky doors

Squealing doors are, at the most, a mild annoyance. If you've held off on repairs to spook the kids during the Halloween season, then the joke will have lost steam by now. So, might as well get respite from the sounds the doors make. The good news is that there's nothing to it. You'll need a lubricant such as silicone spray or lithium grease, both inexpensive and lasting solutions.

Ready your spring cleaning kit

Spring cleaning started as a way to get rid of winter's mess. But it's become increasingly significant in light of the health issues that dusty indoor and outdoor air can cause. And the ongoing pandemic has heightened awareness around maintaining clean air.

All of this makes preparing for spring cleaning with the right tools important for everyone. Check if you have a grout and detail brush, microfiber cloth, rubber broom, scrub sponge, and other handy tools to build a good cleaning system.
