Selecting the Right Roofing Materials and Supplies for the Job

Whether your roof needs repair or a complete tear-off, Do It Best offers all the supplies and materials you’ll need for the job.

Roofing Materials

First, it’s important to determine the type of roof you are installing. You may want to replicate what you have or try something new. Below are some common types of roofing materials:

  • Asphalt shingles are the most common. Installation is straightforward, and repair of individual shingles is easy.

  • Wood shingles or shakes work best in areas with low moisture. They are attractive but costly.

  • Metal roofs are effective in areas with heavy snowfall. They are also fireproof for regions where wildfires are an issue.

  • Clay tile is extremely durable and works well in hot climates.

  • Rolled roofing is one of the cheapest options, usually used on low-sloped roofs. It is less attractive than other options.

Roofing Supplies

Gather the best supplies for the job to ensure that your roof is installed correctly. Wear a hard hat and safety harness if doing the work yourself.

Once the old roof is torn off, examine and replace any damaged decking. Install soffit vents or other ventilation. Next, lay underlayments. In climates with extreme weather, this layer should be waterproof or an ice barrier. Otherwise, a simple roof felt is sufficient. Install flashing to further prevent water from damaging your home. Use roofing nails to attach the shingles. Apply a roof coating if required. Your roof will last for years to come.
