About Us

Joe and Lisa Hellvig purchased Hartford Building Center (HBC) in June of 2008. Lisa is a lifelong resident of the Hartford area, growing up on a farm just six miles north of town. Joe grew up in Watertown, SD and after his marriage to Lisa in 1988, they planted their roots in Hartford where they raised their family of 3 children. Joe grew up around the construction industry and throughout his career he worked in all facets of the construction industry - from designing and estimating, contracting, retail, and wholesale sales. Joe's dream of owning his own home center was realized with the purchase of Hartford Building Center. In July of 2014 Joe suffered a permanently disabling stroke, leaving him unable to work - but not before he passed his love for the industry and desire to own a family home center along to his oldest son, Travis

Due to Joe's stroke, just a few months after graduating from South Dakota State University with a degree in Construction Management, Travis stepped into the Operations Manager role and took over the majority of the day-to-day management of HBC. While at college Travis also met his wife, Erika, who was enthusiastic to join the business and has grown into an integral part of the HBC management team. Travis & Erika have been blessed with 4 children.

Lisa, Travis, and Erika have continued to manage and grow the business together. They are all involved in the Hartford Community through various groups and organizations, as well. They strive for HBC to be an extension of their faith and family values.

The Hellvig family feels blessed to do business in the wonderful community of Hartford and look forward to striving to meet the needs of the community for generations to come.
