About Us
The history of Price Hardware in Atlanta, Texas, is a testament to the enduring spirit of entrepreneurship and community engagement. The roots of Price Hardware can be traced back to 1946 when Roy E. Price, Sr. opened the doors to a 1200 square foot building. The business started primarily with close-out merchandise and government surplus that “Mr. Roy” bought in Hope, Arkansas. As the business grew, basic hardware and building materials were added. I.B. Price, Sr., Roy's father, entered the business as a partner in 1948. The business moved to a 2,500 sq. ft. building expanding the lines of hardware and adding plumbing, electrical, and farm supplies. As the business grew, I.B. “Bogie” Price Jr., Roy's brother, came into the business in 1950. The business expanded into two buildings that were adjacent to each other.
The new location allowed Roy to have a hardware store in one building and “Bogie” to have a sporting goods store in the building next door. The town loved the idea and later the wall between the two businesses was removed. You could walk between the two stores without ever going outside! This was a big deal in Atlanta, Texas!
“Mr. Roy” continued to grow the hardware business, and in 1974 his middle son, John, began working at the store. John took over the day-to-day operations in 1988 and moved the hardware store to its current location, which was previously a Howards Brothers Discount, in 1989. The current location, being 39,000 square feet, allowed John to start an outdoor power department which featured Stihl equipment. John and his wife Carol, seeing the need in the community, had several niche businesses within the walls of Price Hardware. Radio Shack, Just ask Rentals, a live plant nursery called “Normas Garden” and even a gourmet kitchen store, “The Kitchenette”, could be found inside Price Hardware at one point in time.
John sold the business to Curt and Kendra Bates in 2017. Curt continues the long-standing tradition of customer service and community involvement that “Mr. Roy” demanded from his employees. The store has become known for its diverse inventory and knowledgeable staff and serves as a community hub for the Atlanta area. Price Hardware actively participates in local government with four of its staff members serving on various city boards and councils. Price Hardware supports the American Legion/VFW, five local school districts and over thirty local churches.
