Roberts Hardware Story

Founded in 1931 by the Smith family, we have been a fixture in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco for nearly 90 years. 

Roberts Hardware was originally started as a general store selling baskets, brooms, and homewares to the neighborhood at the beginning of the depression era. Soon after opening, we added many more hardware items, paint, electrical and plumbing supplies and became a full-service hardware store. 

The store was actually named for our founder’s son, Robert, as he felt that some day Robert would take over the business. As fate would have it, Robert did decide to stay in the family business and ran it for almost 50 years. 

Today, Bruce and Steve Smith, the third generation of the family, run the store together. As we move on into our 10th decade of providing service to the great city of San Francisco, all of us at Roberts Hardware strive to be the only hardware store that you will ever need.
