DIY Spring Message Board

It is officially Spring! After a long gray winter, surely we can all use some color in our lives. This simple Spring Message Board is the perfect project to do with kids, or on your own with a nice glass of wine! This makes a perfect gift, but we bet you'll want to keep it for yourself once you see the finished project!

Materials

Materials used for DIY spring message board

You can pick up everything for this project right at your Neighborhood Valu Home Center.

  • Testors Craft Paint in any Spring-like colors
  • Rust-oleum Chalkboard paint
  • Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape
  • Gorilla Wood Glue
  • Sea Sponge (cut so there is 1 smaller piece of sponge/ paint color)
  • Sanding block
  • Wood planks (we used 4 garden stakes)
  • 4” Linzer Paint Roller
  • Paint Tray
  • Stencils to spell out “Spring”

The best thing about DIYs is they are 100% customizable to your wants, and needs and this project is no exception! The completed size of our Spring Message Board is about 25” x 17”. We used 4 garden stakes and cut them each in half to create a 7 board surface area and used 1 as a brace on the back.

Preparing the wood to assemble

Preparing Your Wood:

You can stagger the boards if you'd like to give the finished project more dimension, and not to mention if you have any boards that are slightly different lengths, it won’t be noticeable! Once you have planned out your board, flip each piece over so the side you wish to be the back is facing upward.

Tip: Sand the ends of the boards to lessen the chance of cuts and splinters.

Gluing the middle brace

Gluing On The Brace:

Give the board that is going to be your brace a generous covering of Gorilla Wood Glue and gently place it so it is adhering to the other boards. Put some weight on it, and let it dry for at least 30 minutes.

Tape Off Your Chalkboard:

Once the glue is dry, flip the board over, and using the painter’s tape, create the square where you would like the chalkboard paint to go. Now, all you have to do is give the paint a good mix, pour it in a paint tray, grab your paint roller and get rolling! For the best results, apply multiple coats.

Tip: Use a paintbrush to get in-between the planks.

Remove the Tape:

Now comes the most satisfying part. Once the paint has dried completely, remove the tape to reveal your perfectly straight lines.

Sponge Paint Away:

Next, have fun sponge painting around the chalkboard! The only rule of sponge painting is there are no rules; Let your creativity run wild! Use whatever colors you want!

Tip: Put each color on its own paper plate to make it easy to switch between colors, and to avoid blending.

Stencil Spring:

Finally, using the “spring” stencils and darkest color(s) you have on hand to put Spring on the bottom of your board. You could also write freehand, all the power to you!  This step is optional, but it definitely pulls the whole project together!
