Our History: Building Wisconsin for Generations

Born on Milwaukee’s Northside in the late 1800s as a first-generation family lumber business, the company began as North Side Lumber & Fuel Company, founded by Christian Meckelberg to supply coal, ice and essential building materials to the city’s growing near northside neighborhoods.

A turning point came after World War I, when Christian’s daughter, Lorella Meckelberg, began handling the company’s banking. During her regular visits to make deposits, she met J.P. Bliffert, a bank employee at the time. Their connection grew into a partnership, both personal and professional, that would shape the future of the company. After their marriage, J.P. joined the family business, helping to lead it into a new era under the Bliffert name.

Now in its sixth generation of family ownership, Bliffert has grown from one neighborhood yard into a statewide leader in building materials. Over the years, we’ve expanded our reach through steady growth and key acquisitions, including Midwest Millwork, Chase Lumber, Portage Lumber, Oostburg Lumber, Fillinger Millwork, Milwaukee Cabinetry, and most recently, Jauquet Lumber in northeast Wisconsin. Each acquisition has allowed us to serve new communities while preserving the personalized service and local expertise that set us apart.

Today, Bliffert operates 15 locations across Wisconsin, offering top-quality lumber, millwork, cabinetry, hardware, and building materials to professional contractors and homeowners. While our footprint has grown, our core values remain unchanged: integrity, reliability, and a commitment to the communities we serve.
