Our Story

Handy Andy Family of Companies, which includes 5 retail locations (Eastman, Hazlehurst, Hoboken, Lyons, and Vidalia), began as a single unit in 1974, owned and operated by Mr. George Powell and Mr. Darrell Chapman in Statesboro, Georgia. In February of 1975, Mr. Powell opened a second unit, Handy Andy Economy Warehouse, in Vidalia, Georgia. In 1976, Mr. Powell expanded the company to Riedsville when he opened a third location and in 1977 Mr. Powell purchased Mr. Chapman's portion of the Statesboro location becoming the sole owner of Handy Andy Economy Products. As a result of the times, in 1979 and 1980 Mr. Powell closed the Statesboro and Reidsville locations but added a location in Hazlehurst Georgia and officially joined ServiceStar (later it was renamed True-Value). In 1984 Mr. Powell purchased Hoboken Building Supply and two years later he opened the Lyons operation. In 1994, Mr. Powell opened our Eastman location bringing the total number of operating units to 5. In 2012, Mr. Powell retired from the daily operations and turned over the reigns to his son, Russ Bell.
