About Us

Tahlequah Lumber Company has proudly served Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and surrounding communities since 1949, providing quality building materials, dependable service, and a strong commitment to the people of eastern Oklahoma. Our roots run deep in this historic town—the capital of the Cherokee Nation, home to Northeastern State University, and a gateway to the scenic Lake Tenkiller and Illinois River.

Our community has interesting stories about its origin and likewise, Tahlequah Lumber Company has a colorful story about its beginning. Bob Cunningham was a student here in Tahlequah in 1949. While attending church one Sunday, the owner of Tahlequah Lumber asked Bob if he would like to buy the store. Bob gathered together all of his money, borrowed the rest, and while still a student, managed to buy the lumber company.

Bob went to school in the mornings, and with one other employee, operated the business. Over the past 50-plus years, Tahlequah Lumber has grown to more than 70 employees throughout Cherokee County and beyond.

In 1991, the business moved from its original downtown location to a 10-acre site at Park Hill Road and Highway 62 Bypass, where a 50,000 square foot facility was built to better serve the needs of both contractors and homeowners. Today, we offer a wide selection of building materials, hardware, tools, equipment rentals, and a dedicated Installed Sales/Handyman Department.

Tahlequah Lumber is the flagship store of a growing family business. In 2008, the Skinner and Bynum families took ownership and have since expanded their commitment to small-town service and quality products across the region:

  • Pryor Lumber (acquired in 2008): Serving Pryor, Chouteau, and Grand Lake-area customers with modern retail space and personalized support.

  • Wagoner Lumber (reopened in 2015): Reviving a historic name and helping contractors and DIYers across Wagoner County.

  • Sallisaw Lumber (acquired in 2022): Serving Sequoyah County from a unique location with a rail spur for direct lumber shipments.
