Tahlequah Lumber

Tahlequah Lumber Company is located in one of the most historically significant sights West of the Mississippi River. Tahlequah is part of the legend of the settling of America’s Frontier. Several factors combine to make our community a wonderful place to live, with opportunities typically not found in a small town.

  • Capitol of the Cherokee Nation. The largest and most progressive tribe in the Unites States.
  • Home of northeastern State University, the fastest growing university in the Southwest.
  • Recognized as being on of the best retirement communities in the nation.
  • A great tourism industry with Lake Tenkiller and the Illinois River.

Our community has interesting stories about its origin and likewise, Tahlequah Lumber Company has a colorful story about its beginning. Bob Cunningham was a student here in Tahlequah in 1949. While attending church one Sunday, the owner of Tahlequah Lumber asked Bob if he would like to buy the store. Bob gathered together all of his money, borrowed the rest, and while still a student, managed to buy the lumber company.

Bob went to school in the mornings, and with one other employee, operated the business. Over the past 50 plus years, Tahlequah Lumber has grown to more than 70 employees and sales of several million dollars.

Tahlequah Lumber is primarily a building materials home center. However, the store offers an Installed Sales/Handyman Department, and a wide variety of tools and machinery available for rent.

For more than 40 years, the store was located in its original site. As the business grew, it spread over several blocks and four different sales locations. In 1991, a ten acre plot was purchased at the intersection of Park Hill Road and State Highway 62 Bypass. During that year a 50,000 square foot building was constructed to consolidate all space under one roof.

In February 2008, the Skinner/Bynum family, ready to expand their lumber company, purchased a new location in Pryor, Oklahoma. They took an old-fashioned lumberyard, turned it into 25,000 square feet of modern retail space and held Pryor Lumber’s grand opening in the following September.

Then in the Spring of 2016 the family business expanded once again to Wagoner, re-opening Wagoner Lumber in May of that year.
