DIY Valu Bucket Planter

It’s National Gardening Day! If you want to try gardening, but aren’t sure where to start or have limited space, this is the DIY project for you!

Materials:

(9) 5 gallon Valu Home Center Buckets
2”x 4”x 8’ wood planks
2” outdoor wood screws

3" outdoor wood screws

Making the Three Tiers

The three tiers are composed of 5 pieces of wood. Two 11” pieces for the sides, two 39” pieces for the front and back, and the bottom piece that the buckets sit on which is 36“. Using your Genesis Power Drill and 2” outdoor wood screws, go ahead and create those rectangles. They should end up looking something like the picture below.

Tip: Once you have the first one complete, it’s never a bad idea to check and make sure everything fits properly. Once you’re sure you measured everything correctly, get two more of those ready to go!

Assembly

Tip: The finished product resembles stairs so keep that in mind as you’re assembling your planter.

First Tier:

The best place to start is where else, but the bottom. The legs of the first tier are 1’ in height. You will need two 1’ pieces of wood, screw them to each end of the bottom-front of the first tier. Hold them together with 3” wood screws. For the back of the first tier, you will need two 2’ long planks. Measure and mark the 12” point, which should line up with the top of the first tier. Drill together with the 3” screws. The remaining wood space going upward is where you will attach the front of your second tier. Again, think stairs!

Tip: At this point, if you haven’t done so already, it’s a good idea to tip it on its side, an extra set of hands could be helpful as well!

Second Tier:

Again using your handy-dandy power drill and 3” screws, attach your second tier to that extra wood from the back feet of your first tier. Now, you will need four 3’ wood pieces to attach your second and third tier, and for the back legs of your third tier. Using the same process as you did to connect your first and second tiers only this time sound, mark the 2’ point which should line up with the top of the second tier. The feet should be in line with the others so the finished structure will be stable and even when put upright. Just like before, there should be extra wood space to attach your third and final tier.

Third Tier:

Before you attach your third tier to the second, Attach the back legs just as you did the front first-tier legs. Now, all that is left to do is attach your third tier to the rest of your structure. By now, you’re a pro at that!

Optional:

Here is an optional last step: Pop out the handles of your Valu Buckets if you don’t plan on moving them.

There you go, you did it! Once you get into a rhythm, it’s a lot of repetition and is pretty easy to assemble! Now go have yourself a snack and then come back and get your gardening on!
