If you’ve ever used a rotary tool for light-duty engraving, polishing, or sanding around your home or on your workbench, think of the die grinder as its bigger, more powerful relative. While both employ the same rotating motion and use collets for holding accessories, the larger handheld die grinder typically rotates at a faster rate than a rotary tool.
How Does a Die Grinder Work?
Like its smaller rotary tool cousin, the die grinder’s compact motor spins shank-mounted (typically ¼") accessories at very high speeds (often 20,000 to 30,000+ rpm).
Die grinders are ideal for detail work, and their smaller attachments allow for concentrating force in tight areas to precisely shape, smooth, or grind surfaces. The trade-off for the die grinder’s control and precision is its lack of torque. For heavier cutting, reach for the angle grinder.
What It’s Used For
For metal work and automotive projects, the handheld precision of a die grinder is the ideal choice. With a die grinder, you can debur metal, remove rust, clean welds in hard-to-reach areas, grind inside pipes and other curved surfaces, and port and polish cylinder heads in an engine. It’s also an excellent tool for power wood carving to remove material quickly.
Strengths
While it’s a big step up in power from the crafter’s rotary tool, the die grinder is still relatively light and compact compared with the angle grinder. Its high speeds and smaller size mean it can remove material in tight areas with control and precision.
Limitations
Where the die grinder excels at precision and control, it falls short when it comes to heavy stock removal or grinding large areas quickly. For heavier duty tasks and faster removal of more material from larger surfaces, you’ll want to pick up an angle grinder.
